HCMC through the eyes of foreigners – Richie Fawcett Architectural Artist.

Endless source of creativity

In 2011, British artist Richie Fawcett came to Vietnam with the main job of training bartenders in mixing skills. With knowledge of history, especially having been trained in Egyptian archaeology, combined with a talent for drawing, Richie used pencils and paper to sketch realistic and delicate images down to the smallest details of Ho Chi Minh City.

Richie set himself a challenge, which was to make a “documentary” told in the language of painting called “HCMC Decacity Project”. The collection depicts the changing appearance of HCMC in 10 years (2013-2023).

Richie confided: “I have to carry out this project as quickly as possible, because if I hesitate, I will not have the opportunity to see the transformation of a young, dynamic city like Ho Chi Minh City.”

Richie’s paintings have captured the memorable milestones of a city with low-rise houses, small shops, and old apartments that have now become shiny glass skyscrapers, bearing the appearance of modern architecture.
